My Sad Rat

Written on Tuesday December 20, 2011 at 7:14 p.m.

I have this pet rat named Alfred. He's a super sweet albino fancy rat who has recently developed a very large tumor and unfortunately I won't be able to pay for the cost to have it removed.

He seemed comfortable enough living with it at first but about a week after it first appeared he began to bite at it to the point where it began to bleed, and he hasn't relented long enough for it to scab over since.

I'm thinking now the poor little guy probably needs to be euthanized, but I'm not really sure how to ask my vet about that without feeling like a terrible person.

Attending the Winter Social

Written on Wednesday December 14, 2011 at 6:40 a.m.

I participated in the Coder's Winter Social today hosted at Urban Airship, and managed to meet at least a few people. A couple of those were trekkies / Joss Whedon fans so I had a pretty good time chatting about that for a bit.

I managed to meet someone there with a really interesting project idea, that I won't reveal here in case she wants to keep that private, but I am hoping she sends me a message regarding that so I can help do some work on it, even if my schedule has been kind of packed recently.

I think I've made a choice not to go back to school. I really like the idea of being back in classes, and it can never hurt to continue your education, but financially it's probably not worth the benefit I would get out of going back at this point. I'm already doing what I love, every day. I still have time before I have to decide, maybe if my fafsa funding comes through i'll go.

My Favorite Pastime

Written on Saturday December 10, 2011 at 10:41 p.m.

I've spent too much time the last week doing development. Most of it was for work of course, but even when I had spare time I used it working on projects instead of spending some time away from the a text editor and console. I don't regret that choice per se - but I realize that this needs to change or I'm going to burn myself out again.

Nevertheless, I spent the morning working on the style and code for the twitter module that I'm now using on the front page of the blog. I love how it turned out, and i'm glad I'll have some content on here that's updated frequently. I tend to tweet at least daily, but usually more frequently than that.

Minor Blog Changes

Written on Sunday December 4, 2011 at 10:31 p.m.

I've made some minor changes to the blog, most notably you can now post comments again. This is powered by Disqus.

The area around the comment form is a little clumsy, it needs some clarification on language. The "Like" and "Dislike" buttons apply to the comment thread on disqus, not the page itself, so I might disable them. I also don't really like the trackback link style - but these are things that can be fixed once I decide how I want to fix them.

I'll spend more time on those details next weekend, for the time being I think I need to get some non-computer time. Possibly eat some yellow curry and play Skyward Sword.

Good News Everyone!

I managed to get a copy of all my old blog posts today, so I'll be able to restore some posts at least as old as 2002, there may be older but I didn't have a chance to check how far back the history goes.

I spoke to an advisor at Clark College today, pretty much told me what I had already anticipated, that I should start off slow and take the basic prerequisites before moving forward, and he recommends I start the math track because it's long.

I'm going to do a little more CrowdCompass work, and then I'll take a small excursion to try to get textile or markdown working on my blog posts, maybe I'll tell you guys about how that goes next if it isn't too embarrassing.

P.S. - I got markdown working with Redcarpet ;-)
